It’s true - you are the one living this big, fat, sassy, beautiful, complicated and challenging life. It’s yours to do with as you may. You can struggle, strive to maintain a sense of comfort, or meet life’s lessons to grow in wisdom and connection. Probably we do all these things, at different times in our lives! Yet the longing for spiritual wholeness and impetus to evolve is baked in, whether you answer the call or not. It’s coming from what underlies this body, mind and emotions; the soul.
Finding balance with the sense of self, our relationship with all other beings, and phenomena in the world isn’t easy. Neither is it a consistent experience, although the more frequently we can access it the better. Sitting on that fulcrum with a sense of ease and peace feels so right and encourages us to carry on in that direction.
As we navigate stormy weather, most have that destination in mind. It may be buried in feelings of hopelessness and confusion; those states can be worked with. Unfortunately, what is also baked into humans are instinctual drives toward the negative. Harder to overcome are the three poisons of Buddhism – ignorance, delusion and pride. Pride is the root that tempts us to believe in our superiority. It justifies greed and ill will toward others.
It's easy to see – and experience! - that we are a walking contradiction. Oscillating between the need for love and connection, and the impulse to dominate for individual gain. What has happened to people who let loose their “lower” aspects? Who abandon all pretense to goodness in favor of abuse and destruction?
The soul comes in at conception and leaves at death (it’s thought to weigh 21 grams!) While here on earth, the soul underlies all and emanates to the degree it can. That depends on the “obscurations” in our energetic bodies. It’s like clouds in the sky that obscure the sun. The more we clear the atmosphere, the stronger our soul’s radiance is – and the more power* it has in our lives.
In a person who is considered evil, the soul has lost control over their base instinctual nature. It no longer has any meaningful influence. The soul still exists in that person, although it's completely hidden; it has no agency. “The d-evil made me do it!” speaks to the soul losing the battle to override the lower impulse.
What can we do when we encounter true evil? Having compassion for all doesn’t mean we surrender, abandoning ourselves and others to suffer the consequences. If we stand for love and peace, we also stand against hate and aggression. It’s easy to justify the urge to violently oppose wrongdoing; but righteous action is called for! We cannot surrender to the same reaction, to destroy what we fight against.
Large scale non-violence has changed the course of history before, and it can again. People have given their lives for justice; fortunately we have many incarnations to grow and evolve our soul. It’s all we take with us into the next life. Joining with others in the higher frequency of love creates an irrepressible energy field, and a powerful antidote to darkness!
